Hello everyone! I spent many hours the other day trying to figure this out. Now that I know exactly how to do it I have composed this guide to show you how you can install custom firmware onto your PSP.
In this guide you will use a Pandora Battery and a Magic Memory Stick to install custom firmware onto your PSP. The Magic Memory Stick can be made using any memory stick you have that is at least 100MB. (I would recommended using a 4GB SanDisk because that's the one I used.) The Pandora Battery you will have to buy. There are guides online showing how you can make your own Pandora Battery out of a regular battery but that still require an additional battery that you may have to buy and once you convert it into a Pandora Battery you can't go back. The Pandora Battery that I ordered only cost about $8 with free shipping and it has a switch so that I can use it as a Pandora Battery and as a regular battery.
OK, So let's get started!
OK, So let's get started!
Parts List
- Pandora Battery
- Memory Stick Pro Duo (At least 100MB)
- Sony PSP (I did this on a PSP Slim 2000)
- USB Cable
Step One
OK, So let's get started. First you will need to download a few things. The first thing that you need is PSPGrader. This program will help you create the Magic Memory Stick. In this guide I used PSPGraderV008. Next you will need the original firmware for your PSP. Sony releases these to the public so there shouldn't be a problem in obtaining them. For my PSP I downgraded to firmware version 5.00, I originally had 6.37. I would recommended just going down to version 5 as well. There aren't any real features that you will lose; that was one of my main concerns at first. After the files have downloaded you can uncompress them. Uncompressed the PSPGrader should have one file in it and the PSP firmware should have a file called EBOOT.PBP. Once you have those two pieces of software you are ready to proceed onto step number two! (Download Links will be after this step)

Step Two
Now let's move onto creating the Magic Memory Stick! I would recommend backing up everything on the memory stick to your computer. This is what I did and it removes more chances for there to be problems.
Now you can run PSPGraderV008. If you are using Vista or 7 make sure that you run the program as an administrator to avoid any problems.
Now you can plug your PSP into your computer and go to USB Connection on your PSP. You PSP should pop up on your computer and PSPGrader should find it and adjust to the correct drive letter. Next you will click on "Load Official eBoot." Point it to the firmware that you downloaded earlier. It should be called EBOOT.PBP. At this point you are about ready to click "Create Pandora Stick." There is just one optional thing. I would recommend that you select to format the memory stick. This is what I did. It will erase everything that is currently on the memory stick but it leaves less room for errors. Now you may click the create button! After a few minutes you will be all ready to start the new firmware installation process on your PSP.
Step Three
Now completely power off you PSP. If your battery is not fully charged be sure to charge it. If it dies during the Installation you may toast your PSP.
Insert the Magic Memory Stick
Hold Down the left trigger button
Power on the device while holding down the left trigger button
You PSP should boot into a recovery console. There will be some options to choose from. You will want to select the option to Install the Custom 5.00 M33 firmware. Make sure that you select the option with the M33 firmware in it. This will ensure that you install the correct firmware. The new custom firmware will begin to install. Now you can just wait. The device will need to be rebooted after the installation is done. Be sure that when you reboot your PSP you do not have the Pandora Battery in the PSP. Use a regular battery or make sure that the Pandora Function is off. Once your device is rebooted you will have Custom 5.00 M33 firmware installed! Enjoy! If you have any questions please post them in the comments and I will be happy to help you!
